I realized that I didn't care for the grip, and for some reason these things vibrated when the pole hit the ground.

Positive Feedback

I have never liked poles that fold as much as poles that don't.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Lightweight design for ease of use
I realized that I didn't care for the grip, and for some reason these things vibrated when the pole hit the ground.
Are they all basically the same equipment offered by random companies, so that it doesn't matter which I get.
reasonably priced, reasonably weighted, and suit all of my needs (adjustable, different attachments for varying conditions)
They are feather light, and good for balance, but vibrate when I put any sore of weight on them.
Collapsible for easy storage and transport
Cheaper poles will have the sinking lock problem.
It’s pretty much just like the Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Cork, in that it’s a sturdy pole that’ll keep you upright in most hiking scenarios.
I can put plenty of lateral stress on my poles while trying to pull myself up the side of a mountain, without worrying about snapping / damaging the poles.
Adjustable height with secure locking mechanism
I only really have experience with quick lock systems. so /u/UiPossumJenkins probably has a better take on which locking system is better.
the most noticeable difference is the locking mechanism.
You won't break them.
It depends on the brand/design – I have a set of folding poles which do adjust in length.
Beneficial for downhill support
They are very beneficial on uphills, and most particularly downhills.
They’re so underrated on descending!
Helps with posture and gait on flat terrain
Poles can be SO good on flat land if you use them at an angle and use them to push your body ahead, instead of using them for support.
I love them most on the flats. They really help me with form: getting my posture right, extending my gait, getting a good pace.
On flattish ground, they are amazing at propelling you along.
Quick adjustment to usage
It was great way to engage the upper body as well.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Folding poles are perceived as less reliable
I have never liked poles that fold as much as poles that don't.
I managed to wear the mono price poles down to plastic nubs in less than 500 miles.
Now it's Leki and I'll be a lifer. GREAT customer service and sticks you can trust.
Folding poles perceived as less reliable
I can't decide on which to go with for my AT thru attempt.
there’s usually a reason one product costs more and i’ve come to rely on that difference.
If you are short, telescoping ones will probably work better for you.
Durability issues reported with budget options
I don't think I can give a good estimate on lifespan other than "long enough that they're a great value at $23".
Crap company imo
Stay away from the twist-lock type.
Mine are going on 5 years with no issues.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about testing poles for personal preferences
you have to test them out before your big hike; you will find people that swear by the daintier poles and others that hate them.
The running poles are extremely light, but I prefer adjustable poles for storage and tent set up.
Mention of various brands and their features
The flick lock system of the CP3 is far superior to the twist lock mechanism in my opinion.
Fizan Compact 3 are 5.7 oz each and aluminum for increased durability.
Discussion about locking mechanisms preference
The spin ones eventually wore out and slipped on me.

That's a serious trip, plus I imagine terrain will be challenging at times. I would get something from a reliable brand.

I use these as well and are great starter poles. If Costco doesn't have them, other places should.
Discussion about brand reliability and experiences
Pony up for Black Diamonds. Their Distance Carbon series is a great pair.
I have Leki poles with cork handles (helps with the hand sweat) and love them.
The breaking thing didn’t bother me as much as black diamonds refusal to replace them.
people really like the Cascade Mountain Tech ones.
Mention of alternative brands and pricing
FYI Costco has Cascade Mountain Tech poles for $29.99 currently, the carbon fiber with cork handle ones.
Skepticism about the necessity of trekking poles
While I’ve heard some good things, I don’t know how beneficial they will actually be or, if they’re worth taking.
I dont even get out of bed without trekking poles
Discussion about affordable trekking poles
Affordable Trekking Poles
I've got a pair of Trail Buddy hiking poles that have lasted me really well for the past ~100 miles of hiking
I have Leki’s. I really like them. But they are pricey. If you can find them used, or on sale, in your price range, I highly recommend them.
Costco. Also, I prefer a wooden DIY staff most of the time, cost $0.
Discussion about travel regulations for trekking poles
15” folding trekking poles on Carry-on “Trekology” makes a 15” foldable trekking pole.
My understanding was that poles were considered potential weapons so they always had to be checked in.
I imagine trekking poles would be the same unless their all plastic or carbon maybe?
I thought for sure it would get taken.
Mention of alternative poles and their quality
I have been extremely happy with my Fizan Compact Trekking poles.
Discussion about alternative brands and pricing
I would pay extra for the cork grips, sometimes when I’m sweaty I get a hit spot from the plastic ones.
look for Fizan poles. The basic model, Compact 4 costs as little as 60eur in Europe. They are super lightweight, aluminium shaft and EVA foam grip.

if you have access to a costco the [Cascade Mountain Tech](https://www.reddit.com/r/CampingGear/comments/1bzwj5d/cascade_mountain_tech_costco_poles_are_back_in/) carbon ones are pretty cheap and have generally favorable reviews.
For only 30ish more dollars you can get some at REI that will be much more reliable and last you for years of repeated use!
