My biggest concern is max extension - I need a minimum of 140cm for use for pitching my Mid - without them being too heavy.

Positive Feedback

Why not another pair of Cascade Mountain Techs, unless you just have money to throw at poles? CMT poles are value kings

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Lightweight design
My biggest concern is max extension - I need a minimum of 140cm for use for pitching my Mid - without them being too heavy.
I put 2500 miles on a pair before leaving them in a hiker box so I wouldn’t have to check them on the plane ride home.
I typically only use both poles while hiking when necessary fwiw.
They are feather light, and good for balance, but vibrate when I put any sort of weight on them.
Compact and portable
I was hoping for some insight from people who have used these particular poles.
some folks went cheap and regretted it, some couldn’t tell the difference.
Provides support and reduces stress on joints
they take a *lot* of stress off of your leg joints.
Will never go on long backpacking trips without them.
They help with stability, tent poles (if your tent is compatible), first aid, and make you a more efficient hiker.
Improves balance on steep inclines
They help you stand upright on the steep inclines. Better balance and breathing.
Helps reduce pressure on knees and joints
Yes.
Yeah, close to 40 myself, I've always had knee issues, but genuinely I find that walking poles take the pressure off and means I can walk further, faster and for longer.
They do take some of the pressure off and assist in wet / snow if you do start to slip or fall.
Really helps the knees on descents, really helps stability on rough ground.
Improves stability on rough terrain
They are just second nature to me now and I always take them on a hike.
Helps on downhills
Helps on the downhills. And all the old folks I see hiking use trekking poles.
Provides control and ability when hiking with a pack
Much more control and ability.
Invaluable for crossing deadfall with a heavy pack
Like having extra legs
Beneficial for downhill hiking
They are very beneficial on uphills, and most particularly downhills.
They’re so underrated on descending!
Helpful for maintaining posture and gait
Poles are like turbo boosters.
They really help me with form: getting my posture right, extending my gait, getting a good pace.
Useful for propelling on flat terrain
On flattish ground, they are amazing at propelling you along.
Provides additional confidence on slopes
having a pole on a slope gave me an additional point of contact that gave me some confidence and made me less reliant on keeping my balance.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on personal experiences with poles
While I’ve heard some good things, I don’t know how beneficial they will actually be or, if they’re worth taking.
It was great way to engage the upper body as well. I walked in more upright position which was great for my back.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Debate on the effectiveness of using one versus two poles
Just think how much more effective your pointing could be with double the poles!

Discussion on pole recommendations
Why not another pair of Cascade Mountain Techs, unless you just have money to throw at poles? CMT poles are value kings
and CMT sells replacement sections... way cheaper than buying new poles
This is the way. If the failure was from the twist locks, consider Skurka's modification
Do people read the original question at all before flocking to recommend the only pair they have experience with? Lame.
Personal preference for using trekking poles varies by age
I'm taking them, partly because I'm using a trekking pole tent, partly because my knees will thank me.
Keep on Keeping in!
Trekking poles are commonly included in gear lists
Online gear lists always include trekking poles. Is it worth the investment?
Discussion on preferred trekking pole brands
How are your experiences with these poles if you have used them? A specific question would be, if the weight difference is negligible at this point?
Anything Leki is the way to go, in my opinion.
Probably gonna buy the Chinese poles at some point.
Leki Ultratrail for sure
Discussion about personal preferences for using trekking poles
I also usually only bring my pole when one of my knees are acting up, so it tends to stay in the hand where it's most useful.
I like having a free hand, especially for my technical trails I grab onto trees and such to help and don't rely as much on the pole.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Some people initially skeptical of benefits
Once you try them you'll probably like them. Makes a big difference on hills.
Discussion on different brands and models available
Thanks for the advice I’ll look at getting some.
They all have their little details and you should really go and try some to see what you like.
Discussion about the durability of budget hiking poles
Hello, I've recently started hiking and have used a pair of hiking poles from the middle of Lidl. Needless to say they did not perform the task very well and a 2 day trip has heavily damadged them and the wrist straps do not stay in position.
i just thru hiked the Long Trail with a stick i found on the first day
I've had these for 3 years. Still going strong & only $36.
Cascade Mountain Tech. Good quality great price. Skurka and Dixie(popular hikers) recommend them, and I’ve had mine for a year and love them
Skepticism about trekking poles
I dont even get out of bed without trekking poles
