Helps with stability and pacing while hiking
I find I hike faster with poles, both on trail (because of the extra propulsion), and off trail (extra stability).
I love how they help with the knees, stability, and pacing.
Once I hit my 40’s I found how much poles save my knees on the downhills.
What are some items under 50$ that have drastically improved your time camping??

Only 23 minutes since you posted I would like to know if you are sold
Trekking poles reduce stress on leg joints
they take a *lot* of stress off of your leg joints.
I'm going as a 40 y/o adult in 26 and taking them, partly because my knees will thank me.
Will never go on long backpacking trips without them.
They help with stability on steep inclines
They help you stand upright on the steep inclines. Better balance and breathing.
They help with stability, tent poles (if your tent is compatible), first aid, and make you a more efficient hiker.
Lightweight design enhances portability
I just ordered a new tent (Durston Gear X-Mid 1 Solid), and I’m now looking to get trekking poles to go with that tent.
EVA handle provides comfort and grip
Mine has 4 setting from 1 lumin to 900.
Helps on downhills
Is it worth the investment? I have a tent for shelter so is there any other use?
Helps on the downhills. And all the old folks I see hiking use trekking poles.
Increases control when hiking with a pack
Much more control and ability.
Invaluable for crossing deadfall with a heavy pack
Like having extra legs
Helps reduce strain on knees during downhill hikes
They are very beneficial on uphills, and most particularly downhills.
They’re so underrated on descending!
Enhances hiking efficiency on flat terrain
Poles can be SO good on flat land if you use them at an angle and use them to push your body ahead, instead of using them for support.
On flattish ground, they are amazing at propelling you along.
Improves posture and gait while hiking
I love them most on the flats. They really help me with form: getting my posture right, extending my gait, getting a good pace.
Increases control and stability when hiking
There was a lot less load on my knees and front parts of my thighs.
Get one with the red light feature. Doesn’t blind your camping buddies.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about the weight and sturdiness of trekking poles
Likely not as light as some of the others, but I have been quite pleased with my Paria Outdoors carbon poles.
Discussion about carbon fiber pole durability
I'm trying to evaluate durability of CF poles.
but also the pole because my aluminum FLZs, and my subsequent other poles, have seen harder use and didn't snap like toothpicks.
They never broke, I just lost them at some point.
I think this was a combo of bad luck and his fault.
Discussion on preference for flip-locks over twist-locks
Flip-locks lock absolutely.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on the versatility of trekking poles for multiple uses
I've never used trekking poles or thought of using them before so I'd like some pros/cons discussion here.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Recommendations for other trekking pole brands.
Why not another pair of Cascade Mountain Techs, unless you just have money to throw at poles? CMT poles are value kings (especially if you have Costco membership)
The two piece “black ultralight” CMT carbon poles are my favorite poles. I put 2500 miles on a pair before leaving them in a hiker box so I wouldn’t have to check them on the plane ride home.
Concerns about budget-friendly trekking poles
Budget trekking poles Looking to finally start using them but I don't want to break the bank until I've gotten used to using them on hikes.
The Cascade Mountain Tech carbon ones are great.
I use these as well and are great starter poles.
My husband and I both use the $20 cascade mountain ones from Amazon and they're just fine.
Concerns about the necessity of using trekking poles
Carbon poles on a budget Hey guys. What carbon poles do you recommend if you are trying to spend as little as possible? This is for trail running, not hiking.
Why carbon if budget is important? Folding aluminum poles are very good even if they're a little heavier.
Concerns about length adjustment range
the updated version doesn't have the same length adjustment range as my old ones do
Insanely light and way more sturdy than they have any right to be.
Mention of fixed length poles for specific uses
Fixed length would probably be a great option if I wasn't also using the poles when I'm out backcountry hunting with a 50+ lbs bag side hilling some sketchy rock where being able to palm the top of the grip is really handy.
Testing poles before buying is important for personal preference.
Anyone use the zpacks poles at all? Wondering about durability ergonomics locking system ect.
The answer is that you have to test them out before your big hike; you will find people that swear by the daintier poles and others that hate them.
The running poles are extremely light, but I prefer adjustable poles for storage and tent set up.
Comments on various brands and comparisons.
Fizan Compact 3 are 5.7 oz each and aluminum for increased durability.
The flick lock system of the CP3 is far superior to the twist lock mechanism in my opinion.
They are feather light, and good for balance, but vibrate when I put any sore of weight on them.
Discussion about differences between cheap and expensive trekking poles
Not sure what would be the advantage of the expensive option (eg black diamond) compared to the cheap one (eg decathlon).
From my perspective, I would say the most noticeable difference is the locking mechanism.
Performance is equal between them and the CMT poles are much less expensive and come with a variety of tips.
Both have been great for me, so comfortable and I’ve had no issues.
Personal preference on using trekking poles varies
Trekking poles Are trekking poles a good idea for Philmont? Asking for adults and scouts. Not sure i
Mention of budget-friendly trekking pole options
They even carry a recommendation from Andrew Skurka.
Discussion about various trekking pole brands
How are your experiences with these poles if you have used them? A specific question would be, if the weight difference is negligible at this point?
Anything Leki is the way to go, in my opinion.
Probably gonna buy the Chinese poles at some point.
Leki Ultratrail for sure
Discussion about carbon poles on a budget
On average an aluminum pole is 20g heavier. That's a GU.
I got a set of carbon BD Distance Z poles during the REI winter sale on Saturday.
Discussion about preferences for different hammock brands and designs.
Beautiful and well maintained.
Very bulky and heavy compared to my whoopie slings but really easy to set up.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about extension length for trekking poles.
My biggest concern is max extension - I need a minimum of 140cm for use for pitching my Mid
Do people read the original question at all before flocking to recommend the only pair they have experience with? Lame.
Discussion about pole durability and replacement options.
and CMT sells replacement sections... way cheaper than buying new poles
This is the way. If the failure was from the twist locks, consider Skurka's modification
Concerns about grip when poles are wet
when the poles are wet you can't get grip.
