What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Easy to use with one-button operation
[this rice cooker](https://a.co/d/cfzsc0R) Has served me so well. Makes more than enough rice for 2 people in one go. It’s like the apple product of rice cookers, one button. Easy.
I eat rice most days, so being able to throw it in the cooker with some water, then have it maintain temperature and keep it tasting fresh (for up to 24 hours!) is super helpful and convenient for me.
Yeah. My boyfriend forgets he’s making stuff or walks away for too long but doesn’t believe in “convenience” items so I’m constantly making sure things aren’t burning or the stove isn’t left on.
a simple rice cooker with a single button is enough for most people
Saves time and money with delicious rice every time
Owning a rice cooker has saved me so much time and money.
Popular choice among users
I've noticed that way more people buy black and decker so there seems to be reviews saying that the rice cooker leaks water but there are a lot of good reviews as well.
Convenient automatic keep warm feature
the best part of a rice cooker is that when it is done it just keeps it warm without further over cooking and you lose much less steam.
really enjoy being able to program the cooking and keeping it warm automatically afterwards.
The keep warm function is essential for us, and it works better in some models than others.
Reliable cooking results every time
100%, we have the same one and it's bomb. Cooking with coconut milk or chicken broth still comes out perfect every time, it just perfects rice no matter what.
Saves time in the kitchen
Not having to pay attention at all is SO worth it.
since getting it have increased the amount of rice I use, so it's been one of my most successful appliance purchases.
Easy to clean with removable nonstick bowl
I cook rice almost every day, so it's a pain to have to wash the bowl AND the lid every day, especially for such a small quantity of rice.
If I don’t give my rice a thorough cleaning, it bubbles through the lid and makes a starchy jizz shot on my counter.
I know that's quite long, and it always feels a bit like a waste of water, but at least it's totally worth it from the effort you need to put in.
Easy to use for cooking rice
They even have microwave rice packs. 3 minutes. Boom.
No cooking skills whatsoever. Yet I still make rice and steamed veggies better than your mom.
Convenient for larger portions
Also rice is really easy to cook.
Yep, my husband is half Asian and we stuck the rice cooker down in the basement since the instapot works just as well
Reliable and consistent results
We cook rice in a microwave rice cooker and it does a better job than my rice cooker used to
These things are sooo much waste and kind of defeat the cheapness of rice... I can see using them occasionally but if you're a serious rice consumer it would be kind of ridiculous for these to be your main source of rice
Versatile for cooking chicken and rice together
Will my rice cooker make chicken? Hello, I have a Black + Decker 16-cup rice cooker.
Yeah I do it all the time, it’s quick and easy 👍.
No, it should work fine. Mine was the same.
Effective steaming while cooking rice
Can I steam vegetables at the same time while rice is cooking or is that intended to use with water only?
I never had a problem using my steamer basket while making rice.
I threw in some baby carrots while my brown rice cooked and both were done at the same time.
Usually get chopped up in the finished rice.
User-friendly operation with good results
Double-check the manual for any tips first. But it should work while cooking the rice.
Effective rinsing prevents sticking
The rice at the bottom seems over cooked or over saturated.
I rinse it for at least a minute because I know rinsing is important.
Use a rice scoop/spatula to mix the rice around, especially rice at the bottom.
Includes steaming basket for versatile cooking
You can reheat/steam (e.g. dumplings) on top while your rice is cooking.
You can steam essentially any frozen or precooked food above, including dumplings, but also so much more!
Allows cooking chicken and rice together
The cycle is long enough to thoroughly cook the chicken and the flavors mixing is nice.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Perception of lower quality compared to competitors
Aroma. B&D products are garbage imo.
Never had a problem with our Aroma rice cooker and we’ve had it something like ten years. Black and Decker items seem to fail quickly.
Can bubble over if rice is not rinsed properly
if I don't rinse the rice enough before cooking, then it's bubbling a lot more.
Washing rice properly strips a lot of that surface starch from the rice.
Takes up counter space
So just replace your rice cooker / slow cooker / pressure cooker with an instant pot!
Yeah I'm never buying an effing rice cooker. I can boil it in a pot or get the microwave kind.
Not suitable for infrequent rice consumers
Some people don’t eat rice often enough to warrant buying a rice cooker. Some of them might not have enough available counter space or cupboard space to warrant having one. Maybe both.
Perceived as a single-use gadget
If you don’t make rice super frequently, why buy a whole appliance when you can use a pot you already have?
Confusing automatic switch to warm mode
My rice cooker only has a cook option and a warm option. It automatically switches to warm when the rice is done cooking, which is a bit confusing.
Nonstick coating can peel over time
Only got rid of it because the nonstick started peeling.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on rice cooker materials and their impact on cooking
I'm sick of ceramic and nonstick coatings scratching off everywhere, and I simply don't want to have to worry about it.
I always burned my rice. So I bought a rice cooker with a non-stick insert, rice will still turn brown if I don't use enough water, but it's much easier to clean.
That makes sense I have an InstantPot with a stainless steel insert and I always burned my rice. So
I find soaking my stainless pot makes the rice slide right off with hardly any scrubbing and the peace of mind I get from knowing there is nothing in my food like non-stick or ceramic is worth it to me.
Discussion on rice cooker mechanics and performance at altitude
I am sure you are correct that altitude would change things.
Discussion on essential features in rice cookers
I grew up cooking rice in pressure cookers, easy no fail system.
Rice pattern resembles European continent
how very much the rice pattern looks like the European continent.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Variety of cooking methods for rice and personal experiences
NO STICKING
rinse the rise and then 1;5 cups water to 1 cup rice, bring to the boil, turn to just over medium for 9 minutes.
I do essentially the same thing. Perfect rice every time.
Discussion on cooking chicken in rice cookers
Idk about that specific model, but I cooked chicken all the time in the random no name brand one I had in college.
My cheap rice cooker can do the same. If you are worried about it being cokked, I would cut the chicken to thiner pieces.
Yes, you may need to adjust. Check the chicken after first run of cooking by poke a fork around the bone joint.
Discussion on cooking methods and food combinations
Salmon and chicken too.
does this not drip juices into the rice? or is that a good thing? 😆
Discussion on rice cooking techniques and ratios
You can screw up rice just as easily in a rice cooker as you can in a pan on the stove top.

Discussion on quality rice cookers under $30
Best bang for your buck on a cheap rice cooker ?
Discussion on rice cooker capacities and needs
Do you need a 16 c. rice cooker. That’s a lot of rice.
Yeah, that’s my reaction— that’s a looooot of rice.
if you're a college student and don't have much money just get whatever the cheapest home brand one is, or a near-free one on fb marketplace, they still do a good job
Discussion on price range and quality of rice cookers
What are actually good rice cookers? I feel like all the reviews I find are completely bs and sponsored.
I'm realizing this is probably something I can cheap out on and be satisfied.
there's really no need to go all out on the cooker
Discussion on the simplicity of inexpensive rice cookers
I like the really simple ones that just have a lever. The one I have works great and is going on 20 years old.
IMO the cheap ones are ingenious, they use a magnet that is calibrated to lose its magnetism above the temperature water boils at.
Same. I am amazed by how simple my cheapo one is.
Discussion comparing rice cooker to stovetop cooking
It's kind of like the difference between a toaster and an oven. It's set to turn off at just the right time so that it doesn't burn if you walk away from it.
I'm a pot user and just like to chime in with my experience. I'd argue the process is almost exactly the same as with a rice cooker.
Discussion on rice washing techniques and their impact
I rinse it in a strainer for 10-15 sec. I'm not getting in there and rubbing the rice grains against each other; that would be more effort than it's worth.
It helps, but it won't eliminate the bubbling.
Discussion about rice cooking methods
The Minute Rice cups are good, I put them in the microwave for 1 minute with a pat of butter on top under the coating.
So easy to cook rice in a pot though.
Comparison of rice cookers to other appliances
Just buy an instant pot. It's an everything cooker
Comparison of premium rice cookers to basic models
but if you just want it for rice, there are plenty of cheapo rice cookers for ~25 USD that are reliable and last forever.
Discussion on cooking techniques and cleaning challenges with rice cookers
it is not about "pennies" of rice! Burnt rice smells and is difficult to clean.
Interest in budget rice cookers
I’ve had one for years, and it’s great.
Advice on budget alternatives for rice cookers
Those are more expensive than ramen. Take a few weeks and eat only ramen and set aside a small amount of money to buy a cheap aroma rice cooker/steamer.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on how rice cookers work
My rice cooker is such a small machine how can it figure out when to stop cooking the rice?
It’s not the magnet that has a curie temparuture just over 100°C, it’s actually a ferro magnetic alloy plug at the base of the cook pot.
A small correction: It's not the magnet that has a curie temparuture just over 100°C, it's actually
The rice cooker has a special sensor that can feel the temperature inside. As long as there’s water, the temperature stays around 100°C.
Discussion on troubleshooting rice cooker issues
Question: Cook button won't stay down on new rice cooker
In my experience, these budge machines are controlled either by temperature or weight. If it's temperature, then you're kinda screwed unless you pull it apart and replace the sensor. If it's weight, then you can trick the switch by adding weight to the pot.
Another good way is to fold tin foil and use as the spacer between the pot and spring
Thank you. A 2p coin has just saved our rice cooker.
Humorous takes on rice cooking preferences
This rice cooker has outlasted many marriages.
Don’t really eat bread lol, more rice it is 🤣
Cultural differences in rice consumption
The Japanese eat rice for basically *every meal* tho.
So sometimes even though rice cooker rice is better, the difference isn’t as big as if you were cooking a bigger portion of rice so I don’t bother.
Insights on rice cooker preferences based on cultural background
I have a Zojirushi with fuzzy tech with a few special setting for brown rice, conjee, and sushi rice which I rarely use.
Discussion about brand preferences and rice cooker experiences
What’s a good budget rice cooker? Im a student from germany and I don’t know anything about rice cookers but I want to get one because of its usefulness.
I love my aroma rice cooker, I got it for free from a woman at a garage sale.
Not sure where you are but Publix sells a sweet little rice cooker with a steamer attachment for 20 bucks.
The nonstick aromas last me between 5 and 10 years. They are cheap and have good quality rice, so I haven't bothered with a more expensive rice cooker.
