What’s the deal with rice cookers? I’ve owned parrots for over 15 years at this point, and I’ve done what I feel is my due diligence when it comes to keeping them safe.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Durable and easy to clean inner pot
What’s the deal with rice cookers? I’ve owned parrots for over 15 years at this point, and I’ve done what I feel is my due diligence when it comes to keeping them safe.
Unless that unit catches on FIRE--at which point the Teflon fumes are not the only problem here--they’re perfectly safe.
I LOVE my Zojirushi rice cooker and use it often. My birds are usually not allowed in the kitchen at all.
I am looking for a 3-cup machine for mostly sushi, jasmine, sweet, and brown rice.
Safe to use around pets
a rice cooker never gets remotely close to those temperatures.
Perfect size for small households
I love my 3 cup rice cooker. I live alone and the 2-3 servings make it so I have leftovers but not too much.
Reliable long-term performance
28 years and going (Zojirushi rice cooker) Just your typical Zojirushi rice cooker (NRC-10)
So here goes the story of My Zojirushi rice cooker who's faithfully made rice for the last 28 years without an issue.
I think we have this same model, bought in 1998. Still in use; my wife is Asian and we make rice pretty frequently.
Durable build quality
Fixable products are true BIFL. Congratulations, couple of decades with awesome rice ahead. 🎉
Satisfactory cooking results for basmati rice
We have a Zojirushi and wouldn’t consider using anything else.
Flawless cooking performance for multiple rice types
My kids use it all the time and love the little song when it's done.
It does rice perfectly every time, it stays warm without toasting it, and I can program it to start cooking at the right time for dinner too.
Convenient programming and keep-warm features
It's perpetually hot, like it was just finished cooking.
Durable and long-lasting
I had my prior zojirushi for 15 years and I just gave it away because it wouldn’t die and I wanted the newer one with neuro fuzzy
While I don't have one of their rice cookers (yet?), I do have a few Zojirushi coffee mugs and thermoses and they're the best and I extra love them because of the availability of replacement parts.
Additional versatile cooking options
Your $20 cooker doesn’t make perfect rice of any variety every time and have a dozen other useful features.
User-friendly features like songs when rice is done
I like the little song it plays when the rice is done.
Consistent cooking results
It is incredibly consistent and it can keep rice safely warm for many hours without drying out or dropping to an unsafe temperature.
Literally just 1 switch and it cooks the rice perfectly every time.
Special settings for different rice types
I picked this model specifically because it had settings for sushi, jasmine, and "GABA brown", which is a way of cooking brown rice in a way that preserves/activates GABA in brown rice, a chemical neurotransmitter that promotes calmness.
I use the regular, soft, and hard functions to get my desired texture with different rice types.
Makes the best rice consistently
I got the Induction model (without pressure) and I can attest that it makes the best rice I've ever had in my life.
Handles a variety of rice types well
The benefit to these, and what makes them worth the price, is that they handled “fancy rice” well.
User satisfaction with Japanese-made models
I love mine (I’m at work so I don’t know which model it is off hand) but I did search extra for an authentic one.
GABA rice functionality is highly praised
Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for it
I have the neuro fuzzy and it’s my favorite thing ever you can do so so so much in it!
Induction heating improves rice quality
I love induction heating rice cookers and think they're worth the money if you want quality rice on the regular.
Durability of Zojirushi products
No problems whatsoever.
Induction heating provides quicker and more even heating
The differences aside from size are induction heating which provides quicker more even heating, and micom or micro controlled circuitry that helps do judge when your rice is done just right.
Auto-regulation for perfect rice
the can auto regulate the cooking process to get perfect rice almost every single time.
You can make more than rice, and different types of rice easily with the different modes.
Highly satisfied with cooking results
100% worth it. I have this one and couldn't be happier
Durable and long-lasting performance
Just had our 25th anniversary, and this wedding present is going strong... Use it 2-3x/week!
I bought mine in '96. Used it every day, for years.
Yes! Married in 93, use it two to three times per week and have commented for years that's it's the best wedding gift we received!.
AFAIK, everything Zojirushi makes is outstanding and BIFL.
Great for cooking steel-cut oats
We have a smaller, newer one that we use exclusively for Irish oats.
Steel cut? I make a cup of John McCann's steel cut Irish oats in mine just about every morning and they turn out great! I have a newer model that I bought in 2012, though.
Not only can you, they have a recipe on their website: https://www.zojirushi.com/app/recipe/steel-cut-oatmeal
User-friendly features for versatile cooking
Every single person that's tried rice cooker cake has raved about how good and moist it comes out.
I throw in a chicken carcass and some spices with my rice
Our cooker has a 'Cake' setting. If yours doesn't, it may take some experimentation.
Highly regarded by users for quality
literally top tier Japanese appliances in our eyes
Nice reference. 😂
Durable and reliable performance over time
I've had the NP-HBC 10 for the last 15yrs and its still great.
User satisfaction with quality and performance
I dont think you can really go wrong it more comes down to size and minor features you want.
Love it to bits.
Induction models provide superior cooking results
I haven't tried rice from the inductions models, but what I've been told from others here on reddit is that the induction models cook the rice more evenly since the heat is coming from the entire bowl, rather than just under the bowl, ostensibly resulting in a "better" bowl of rice.
Quality of Japanese-made models
Anything made in Japan will likely be superior in quality, but not every model is made there unfortunately.
User satisfaction with singing feature
Get a 10 cup made in Japan model. They sing to you.
Performs well with small batches of rice
Makes the best rice! The pressure induction is definitely worth it.
Extended keep warm function lets you cook a larger batch and then safely keep it on the counter for a few days in higher end rice cookers like Zojirushi.
Durability over decades
Jojirushi Rice Cookers....this example has been in our family for over two decades.
Got mine in 1996. Was told by a friend that I had to get the Made in Japan model. Best $50 I ever spent.
I have a more modern Zojirushi, I love it to pieces. It's amazing!
Literally have the same model, dropped it out of my car, completely fine.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Rice paddles are poorly designed
They all suck, each plastic one has a seam that sticks out and can scratch.
Not commonly used in traditional Indian cooking
Truth is, typically such cookers are not used in Indian households or restaurants.
I am good with my pressure cookers and regular pots.
High price compared to cheaper alternatives
I just can’t imagine there’s much room for improvement there, so do people buy them for longevity?
Coating deteriorates over time
Try to get one with the stainless steel insert instead of the coated one.
Induction cooking may be unnecessary for rice
The neuro-fuzzy has just enough smarts to compensate for your inability to measure rice vs water.
Limited availability in the UK
I'd be interested if anyone has tried both a YumAsia and a Zojirushi in the UK?
Confusion over price and features between different models
Most are so similar in price and features that it's confusing.
High price compared to alternatives
Zojirushi, Cuckoo, Tatung - Tier One
You got four years out of it.
Potential issues with non-stick coating
Have you never got a hot spot in the non-stick rice container? What magic are you using?
Preference for other brands over Zojirushi
It just consistently makes perfect steamed white rice.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about rice cookers from different brands
I'd be happy to send it to you if they match up.
I grew up with all my family and relatives having a flower print rice cooker regardless if it was a zojirushi, Tiger or National cooker
Discussion on rice cooking methods in Indian households
I find the rice is cooked a bit hard for our taste. Its cooked, it looks perfect. But its not soft and fluffy like we are used to.
True, at the end of the day, the rinse, rice water ratio and cooking time are all that matter.
Giant rice cookers are definitely used in restaurants.
Cultural differences in rice cooking methods
We do have quite a bit of Zojirushi brand thermos and soup bento thermos in my house.
Discussion on rice cooker features and options
I know there’s lots of models- neuro fuzzy, micom, induction vs pressure vs normal.
Discussion about different rice cooker features
And now it died. I'm sad, but the bright side is I'm ready to go all in on a fancy (maybe even ridiculous) Zojirushi.
Discussion on size and features of rice cookers
no real explanation of what the differences are from a glance.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on rice cooking methods and preferences
Sorry if that sounds very dumb.
Fried rice really works best with very high heat, fast cooking, and cooked, cooled rice, and rice cookers aren't really good for any of that.
Getting the exact proportions of butter, rice, soy sauce, and eggs right for your particular taste takes some effort, but after a few attempts, this method got me something virtually identical to my favorite Japanese steakhouse's fried rice :)
Suggestions for using leftover rice
Lastly, make extra rice and use the left over rice to make fried rice the next day!
Or rice pudding.
Questions about using smaller amounts in larger cookers
Yeah why not? I only cook one cup sometimes, and I have to guess where the water marking is.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion on the need for larger rice cookers
Why are you limiting yourself to 3 cups? It's really dumb.
Discussion on personal rice cooking preferences
It’s illogical to get upset in a thread where people were asked to defend $300 rice cookers, because people are (*gasp*) telling you why they’re better.
So do you just always have it plugged in, with rice on the keep warm setting?
Concerns about choosing the right model
Any regrets. Im about to buy an hcc10!
Discussion on alternatives to Zojirushi
Sorry for the bump but this has been a great post for me that saved me a great deal of time!
Concerns about finding product reviews
Thanks for the comment. It does seem like thats the only option..
Discussion on rice safety when kept warm
hey i am curious about that last paragraph - do you actually leave your rice cooker warming rice for days? isn’t that very unhygienic?
The warm setting probably varies between brands but supposedly they keep rice warm by holding it at 150°F (66°C).
interesting! so it’s more of a “hot” than a “warm” setting. my first thought is that it seems really wasteful of energy to keep it hot for days at a time.
While some rice cookers draw 600-1200 watts to make the rice, it seems they only use 30-50 watts to keep it warm.
Comparisons of different rice cooker brands
no one could tell the difference between them! So I would say, don’t get the Zojirushi, go for something cheaper.
Discussion on comparing different rice cookers
So it promptly went back to amazon before i couldn't return it anymore.
I appreciate you taking the time to document this and write it all up.
Discussion on comparing fuzzy logic and induction models
What are the pros and cons of each? why have any of you chosen one over the other?
Discussion on choosing the right rice cooker model
We have started to cook a lot more Japanese/Japanese inspired dinners so I got the thought that getting a legit rice cooker could help out.
The first one is prob the best of the three. Also that style of lever to open the cooker tends to last longer than the push buttons.
You honestly don't need it. Zojirushi is a great brand, but you honestly don't need it.
Comparison with other brands and models
They are durable rice steamers that can be used for white rice, brown rice, and various other foods that need steaming.
Discussion about the capacity of rice cookers
Is it OK to use the 5.5-cup to make 2 cups of rice at a time?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about rice safety when kept warm for extended periods.
Made some Kokuho Rose rice for lunch yesterday. Realized leftovers were still in there the following evening.
We do not recommend that you store your rice in your rice cooker for longer than 12 hours, or 24 hours if your Zojirushi rice cooker has the “Extended Keep Warm” feature.
I’ve ate rice in my cooker sitting at 99 hours for years and never had a problem besides it getting a little dry.
Basically the rice is probably okay except if it’s not then it’s very not.
Concerns about Teflon fumes and safety
In my opinion a rice cooker is safe, it is temperature controlled and unlikely to be scratched or damaged like a pan.
Concerns about the safety of keeping rice warm
Do you just leave the rice in the cooker for a whole day/overnight? I sometimes do that and the rice is always awful after (with a cheaper one)
Concerns about country of manufacture affecting quality
since I heard I should avoid the Chinese made ones, is there any good resource or way to check?
If it doesn't say "Made in Japan" in the top right corner, then that particular rice cooker was made in China.
Discussion about brand origins and manufacturing quality
Only two have made in Japan checked. Look at those 2
