What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Cooks rice perfectly
What's the difference of a $200+ rice cooker over a $30 one? I bought a super cheap rice cooker and it does as advertised, it cooks rice.
I have a cheap one cooks the rice perfectly however on the keep warm function the rice gets crunchy on the bottom.
I got a $70 one that lets you choose rice type and firmness level…but the big thing is you can let it warm for hours and it won’t get crunchy.
This is why i love my rice cooker! Makes it so easy to cook rice in broth, or with a little garlic butter. Tastes so damn good.
Easy to clean
I hated both of them. They always scorched the bottom of the rice, and one was really hard to clean.
Keep warm is good if you make a lot of fried rice.
I have a cheap one and it works perfectly.
There are a bunch of rice cooker cookbooks, too, so you can make other stuff with them.
Compact and portable
It's just a little removable plastic shelf with holes. Pop it in above the rice and the steam does the rest.
Versatile cooking options (e.g., steaming)
Just perfect, fluffy rice.
It makes an incredible difference.
Convenient automatic keep warm feature
the best part of a rice cooker is that when it is done it just keeps it warm without further over cooking and you lose much less steam.
really enjoy being able to program the cooking and keeping it warm automatically afterwards.
I can set it to cook later and keep warm cause I cook and eat rice daily, that’s a cool feature.
the keep warm function is extremely good and also warmth spreads smoothly throughout.
Compact and portable design
Yeah this is a good one. I bought my parents this one and yes going 3 years strong.
Same here. Another device in the kitchen would be annoying for me and a pot works just fine
My rice cooker can start and finish without me being home!
Jumping in here to recommend the Ninja Foodi. Completely changed the way I cook.
Versatile cooking options with additional recipes
the rice cooker makes more than just rice and if you get one with the steamer basket you can make rice and chicken at the same time or your veggies and rice at the same time.
Compact and easy to clean
Really compact, easy to clean.
love it even more.
Versatile cooking options with steaming
Yeah, the steamer basket is fantastic. You can make rice and some steamed veggies all in one go.
I cook salmon in the steam basket
I've only had it a few months, so I can't really speak to the long-term quality... but so far, I've been extremely happy with it during near-daily use.
Cooks rice perfectly and makes it fluffier
It's always cooked to perfection, even if we leave the rice for a while.
It tastes so freaking good. Comes out perfectly fluffy each time.
I have an Instant Pot pressure cooker with the same plastic moat, and it's actually easy to get food out of it.
Good quality rice improves taste
The taste of rice also depends on what kind of rice you use and the water.
Produces consistently fluffy rice
most recently, a rice cooker.
The rice cooker is totally mindless and reliable once you fill it up and turn it on.
Versatile cooking options with recipes
making rice, then when there's eight minutes left on the rice, throwing a couple frozen fish fillets into the cooker with lemon juice or lime and cilantro.
User-friendly and straightforward operation
A rice cooker you put the stuff in, turn it on, and you could literally leave it for hours without even looking at it again.

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Rice can get crunchy if left too long
Same, and it doesn't ding when done, so must be carefully watched and immediately removed and stirred when finished.
South Americans I’ve seen all add oil to rice cookers. Weird.
Cheap rice cookers are fine but give the crunchy layer at the bottom. Good or bad depending on the person.
I have a Cuisinart electric pressure cooker with the same sort of moat, and it is practically impossible to clean.
Build quality concerns
Mine was even cheaper, $18. I bumped it against the counter once and now the button is broken unless I tape it down.
If you're gonna invest in one thing high end for the kitchen, I'd say stand mixer over rice cooker.
Food will fall into that plastic moat around the lid and you will be forced to disassemble the whole thing, possibly breaking it, just to get bits of food out.
Concerns about build quality
Get a $20 one that advertises itself only as a rice cooker, with only 2 modes, "Cook" and "Warm".

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about rice cookers in general
I have been thinking of investing in a rice cooker but my family has never been much in expendable income.
I recently got the Aroma one in Amazon for $30 (stainless bowl) and can’t believe I waited so long.
You dont need to spend a fortune!
But it’s all the other family meals that it can make that to me make it perfect for someone that cooks for family.
Discussion on the impact of rice cooker quality
There was even a model with an LCD touch screen with a bunch of controls... on a rice cooker!
my mum has a big fancy Panasonic and her rice is always way better than mine, but maybe I'm just bad at making rice lol
I think it makes cheap rice grain into an amazing rice.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
General advice on rice cookers
Any tips? I live in Vancouver, B.C. and have seen some for sale at H Mart but have no idea which brands are considered the best or what types of rice cookers are best for someone with no rice cooking skills like me.
The cheaper rice cookers use the basic technology and cook rice in about 20 minutes.
https://www.wired.com/gallery/best-zojirushi-rice-cookers/
If you want something fancier, they sell a Cuckoo rice cooker for under $100 (but the buttons look like they're in Korean).
Discussion about rice cooker features and price differences
cheap rice cookers are a temp sensor and a switch. when the water boils off it stops.
General advice on purchasing and returning rice cookers
Did you give them you email or phone number when you bought it?
Remember the consumer guaranty act says that an appliance should last as reasonable amount of time, a 12 month warranty is actually invalid and it would be reasonable to expect a rice cooker to last at least ten years.
How do they work out if it was a rice cooker and not something else ? amount may differ as you bought other stuff or you made a recent purchase and trying to pass that off as a POP
If you have a date of purchase from your bank statement and the card you purchased with they can look up your receipt and see if you purchased a rice cooker then.
Discussion on frequency of rice cooker usage
been using it multiple times a week for 7 years
We have a Zip, 2-3 times a week, at least 7 years. What is OP doing with their rice cookers!!?
Discussion about budget rice cookers
Trying to add more rice into my diet rather than always pasta so looking to get a rice cooker.
You might want to consider an instant pot? While it might be more than you want to spend, it is a rice cooker and so much more.
General advice on cooking and meal preparation
Nearly all of them are just “chop up these veggies, combine ingredients in the pot, cook on low for 6 hours”.
Slow cookers are awesome! The main thing to keep in mind is they cook “slow” so you have to start it in the morning or early afternoon in order for the meal to be ready for dinner time.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about how rice cookers work
My rice cooker is such a small machine how can it figure out when to stop cooking the rice?
When the cooker reaches the magnet’s Curie temperature, the magnet stops being magnetic, and a spring opens the circuit, shutting off the power.
It’s not the magnet that has a curie temparuture just over 100°C, it’s actually a ferro magnetic alloy plug at the base of the cook pot.
As long as there’s water, the temperature stays around 100°C. But once all the water has been absorbed by the rice or turned into steam, the temperature starts to rise above 100°C.
Cultural variations in rice cooking methods
You can cook with broth in the rice cooker.
In my country you heat oil, burn some onion and sweet pepper you keep them or throw them and then fry the previously washed and dried rice until it stops clumping together due to moisture, then you throw water and sour orange and some people will throw some seasoning like maggi broth cubes.
It's burned crispy rice at the bottom of a paella.
Discussion about rice cookers vs. traditional pot cooking
I'm a pot user and just like to chime in with my experience. I'd argue the process is almost exactly the same as with a rice cooker.
General chatter about rice cooking habits
This rice cooker has outlasted many marriages.
I’m still mad he got rid of our toaster WITHOUT TELLING ME 😫 said it’s just easy to use the oven.
Discussion about rice consumption in different cultures
Honestly, if I ate rice 3-4 times a week, I also wouldn’t bother.
Double digit weekly consumption really is key here.
Debate on the necessity of high-end rice cookers
The power usage of a rice cooker, especially “keep warm” mode, is so low that I reckon it’s negligible.
Discussion on alternative cooking methods for rice
absolutely nothing. but i like the convenience of a rice cooker.
And I endorse their 70$ rice cooker now that is also the equivalent of...70$ today then?
Discussion about rice cookers' durability and lifespan
We literally use it to make white rice and nothing else. I don't understand what we're doing wrong.
a decent rice cooker is a worthy investment.
3-5 years seems more reasonable.
Debate about the necessity of rice cookers
if you eat a lot rice it is well worth it. My Zojirushi is used multiple times a month.
the rice cooker will never leave my counter, rice is flat out better cooked in it.
Discussion on personal experiences with different rice cookers
How much does it cost? I'm interested in understanding the minimum cost for a great rice cooker, even if I end up spending a lot.
Discussion on cooking methods and equipment
Rice in a pot is already set it and forget it for 15-20 minutes lol
Cultural differences in rice cooking
Maybe I'm biased since I was born in an Asian household but rice made without a rice cooker sucks so much
