Coffee stays hot, the press doesn't break, and it's easy to clean." While many appreciate its robust design and ease of use, some express concerns about potential chemical leaching from plastic parts, cautioning others to consider this aspect. Its combination of durability, heat retention, and user-friendly features make it a standout choice in the French press category.

I’ve had a stainless steel, double wall Coffee Gator brand French press for about 7 years now and it’s still going strong with daily use.

Positive Feedback

It has tons of plastic that will heat up and leech toxic chemicals. Hard pass.

What it does well!

Durable and long-lasting
I’ve had a stainless steel, double wall Coffee Gator brand French press for about 7 years now and it’s still going strong with daily use.
Second for the Espro.
Keeps coffee hot for longer
I bought an insulated Stainless Steel FP that'll double as a thermos after pressing, it keeps coffee hot so well.
Love my stainless steel French press! Don't know why I bothered with glass all those years, it is such a no-brainer! Coffee stays hot, the press doesn't break and it's easy to clean.
I also like how it keeps the water hot when brewing, whereas heat escapes the water quickly in glass.
Durable and won't break
I'm sticking with metal

If yours is like mine, it has the added benefit that it is heavy enough to use to defend your home against intruders, and have a piping hot cup of coffee ready for them when they eventually regain consciousness!
Yeah, I won't break it if I drop it, but I may break the floor haha!
Impressive heat retention
Seems pretty solid, & retains heat nicely.
I’ve never had a French press leave less mud in the cup, and it keeps your coffee hot forever
Easy to clean design
One thing I like about it is that it’s easy to disassemble to clean.
Stainless steel insulated press enhances heat retention
Greatly reduces the amount of fine sediment and makes excellent coffee.
Came here to say this
Durable and unbreakable design
Makes good coffee, could also be used to clobber a bear.
I bought a Stainless steel french press from amazon which is insulated and unbreakable.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Comparison of insulation capabilities
Mine has been going on daily use for about 6 years and you would never know.
Preference for well-built insulated presses
Never once have I experienced any difference in taste between a cheap French press and an expensive one.
Preference for insulated stainless steel presses
Insulated stainless steel and double filtration.
Filter parts has a lot of plastic though. That's too bad.
Discussion on grit and sediment in coffee
I bought one recently and it makes a cup that's too clean for my taste.
Grit and sediment make for poor coffee.
Preference for other types of coffee makers like AeroPress
Instead of a Kureg or traditional coffee pot, I got an electric Kettle and was thinking of a French press.
Check out aero press. Simple, super compact, makes fantastic coffee
Yea, these are way better.
+1 on aeropress!!! 👍
Some users prefer to not stir the coffee while brewing
As someone who never stirs. Im not sure about this… 🤔 need to try.
Preference for glass French presses due to longevity
Still looks exactly the same.
Yeah glass is fine just handle with care.
And make sure they sell replacements for the glass part, it's sad to have to buy a new one otherwise.
Preference for stainless steel over glass
since there's a non-zero chance I'll drop the glass press and break it
Espro would be my choice if I ever break my current press.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on the necessity of a French press
Why French Press for JH FP method ? If you are using the James Hoffmann method for preparing your french press coffee, why do you need a French Press at all.
A French press is a device designed to do that for you easily.
Convenience of using a French press while camping
They are also the easiest way to make decent coffee at work or while camping.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Preference for American-made French presses
Not US made, but I love my Freling.
Comparison of taste between cheap and expensive presses
No difference in taste, really.
Value comparison between different brands
Sure - that makes sense.
Comparison of different brewing methods
a technique to get great, repeatable results with a tool you already own
Keeps my pack weight down.
Affordability of French presses
a decent one can be bought for less than 10€ at IKEA, making them one of the cheapest options for coffee brewing
Discussion on coffee brewing techniques and preferences
Nice clean cup of coffee!
At the risk of attracting the wrong crowd, James Hoffman isn’t 100% correct about everything all of the time.
He really hates the muddynes in his coffee so he doesn't mind going the extra mile to make the cup a little bit cleaner, hence the last steps.
And on the other side if you don't mind the muddyness and floating bits of coffee you can skip the plunge, too, and make the coffee directly in the mug cowboy style.
Discussion about preferences for American-made French presses
Haven’t seen a thread on this topic in 3 years so thought I’d see if anyone has updated recommendations.
Even the metal parts of the fancy Harios are made in China.
The [Hario](https://www.amazon.com/Hario-Olivewood-Coffee-Press-600ml/dp/B00BD1NO4O/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=hario+french+press&qid=1592204952&sr=8-4) seems to be made in Japan.
The packaging says made in Portugal and their website talks about their Portugal facility as well.
Mention of alternative brands and models
I like my espro P5
the Bodum Brazil is a great budget option and the Bodum Chambord is a bit fancier and more expensive
it doesn’t make coffee better than a 20 dollar one but it sits on my counter 24/7 and looks really nice so there’s that.
Discussion on the cost-effectiveness of various French presses
The thing about french presses is that the more expensive ones don't necessarily do a better job at actually brewing the coffee, so you're mostly paying for aesthetics and maybe some convenience.
As /u/BrotherNuclearOption mentioned, a more expensive one won't necessarily make better coffee. They just might look better or, if they're made of steel, last longer.
Seeking affordable and durable French press recommendations
Recommendations for affordable and durable French press? I've been using a cheap and simple Mr. Coffee machine but I'd like to purchase a French press.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about plastic parts
This is my only coffee brewing system that has any plastic.
Discussion about the issues with filtration and replacement parts
the filtration and screws kept coming loose and the filters are starting to wear down.
Concerns about taste from stainless steel
the filtration system uses double mesh filters where one of them is micromesh so allows to get a cleaner cup.
Concerns about the fragility of glass French presses
My roommate cleans out her grounds by slamming it on the side of the trash and my boyfriend and I can’t believe it hasn’t broke yet.
Not awesome if it’s the first thing you grab in a sink full of dishes.
