Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Metal French presses offer superior durability and heat retention
Added bonus for not being able to break it.
Don't know why I bothered with glass all those years, it is such a no-brainer!
I bought a metal one to replace it so it will never break, and will probably last me the rest of my life.
I prefer a metal French press, some are double walled it keeps the coffee hotter for longer.
No significant taste difference between cheap and expensive French presses
I’ve had a basic Bodum that I found at a discount store for $8 years ago and it’s still kicking strong.
Co-sign this.
Metal French presses offer superior durability compared to glass models
I broke every glass one within a few months of having it
Probably my favorite (if least messy!) incidents were when I managed to accidentally whack the things wrong on the sink while washing them out.
Grab the French press off the roof of my car. It's metal for me now.
There’s a reason cell phone cases sell so well.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Many users prefer alternative brewing methods (Aeropress/Pour-over)
Fucking hate cleaning my french press.
They're cheap as hell and make a fucking cup of coffee like no other.
The Aeropress is by far the best way I’ve found for making coffee.
Pour over is the way to go.
French presses are also used for brewing tea
I didn't realise people used them for tea until pretty recently, but I guess that makes sense! :D
Saves buying a separate teapot
(Forget k-cup coffee, might as well just drink the hot water and be done with it!)

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Proper grind size and brewing technique is critical
But damn, I like it.
Real slow. Like barely enough pressure to get it moving slow.
Get a burr grinder :D
French press models are praised for easy cleanup
Clean up is also dead simple, as all you have left when you're done plunging are fairly compressed grounds that you can just pop right out into a garbage can.
I like that I can "shit" the coffee straight into my travel mug, and there's almost no cleanup, just eject the puck-o-grounds into the compost/trash.
Using a French press can save money compared to buying coffee daily
As a regular coffee drinker, I can't tell you how much money this French press has saved me.
it is sooo much better!
Proper disposal of coffee grounds is necessary to avoid drain clogs
it gets stuck with the fat down the drain creating a sort glob of fat that dosen't melt when hot water is applied so you end up with a stoppages that take about an hour using boiling water and about 10 bars of pressure to remove.
Down the drain, sure, just run the water a bit, but never into the disposal.
If you have a garbage disposal.
Preference for alternative brewing methods over the Stanley press
It makes great coffee and literally mostly cleans itself.
I use an American Press at work for ease of use and ease of cleanup.
Espro travel press
I don't know about the Stanley press, but I used a Bodum travel press when I worked a desk job and loved it.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Inevitable fines and silt in French press coffee
You probably have to replace the screen, there should never be grounds in your cup from a french press.
You will always have fines in FP coffee, no matter how fine the mesh is.
But yes, the super fine stuff that's inevitable will not be filtered by the mesh
But that super fine stuff crosses over to being part of the character of the coffee.
Flavor contamination concerns when switching from coffee to tea
Yes, it’s fine. Just wash it well after using coffee and before tea.
I will always taste notes of the coffee.
it will end up over steeped, even if you have pressed the leaves to the bottom.
I never make coffee with it though.
