Go steel, as cheap as you can. Glass works the same but breaks eventually.

Insightful Chatter

I bought an insulated Stainless Steel FP that'll double as a thermos after pressing, it keeps coffee hot so well. Added bonus for not being able to break it.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Metal French presses offer superior durability and heat retention
I bought an insulated Stainless Steel FP that'll double as a thermos after pressing, it keeps coffee hot so well. Added bonus for not being able to break it.
Don't know why I bothered with glass all those years, it is such a no-brainer!
Yes, and it tastes way better than drip IMO.
It's probably out of production but Ikea used to sell a big, double wall stainless French press that earned the approval of the Alpha Weird Coffee Person, James Hoffman.
Ease of use and cleaning for French presses
It's easy to use and clean!
There's no dark compartment that can get nasty. (The videos of people cleaning machines out and they find slime are staged.... Right?)
Material impacts heat retention (glass requires preheating vs stainless steel retains heat)
French press only guy here. I replaced my bodum with a SS version from some no name brand after breaking what was probably my 15th carafe.
I bought a VonShef Red Double Wall a good few years ago. It's a fantastic size, keeps the coffee warm, and I can and have switched out the filters many times.
If you grind the coffee to slightly more coarse than you would for filter drip, you can let the coffee extract for four minutes, then break the crust with a spoon and push the plunger down half way or so and let it sit for five to eight minutes while the silt settles through the filter screen and onto the bed of grounds below the filter.
Stainless steel French presses are durable compared to glass models
Never going back to glass. Stainless works and works and works, and works.
This was after breaking three glass French presses.
Stainless steel, double filter, replaceable parts including gaskets, there's nothing to go wrong.
Debate over manufacturing origins and material safety in French presses
Hey buddy, did you ever find a french press NOT made in China?
My Hario French press and kettle say made in Japan?
If you can't find one, the [Hario] seems to be made in Japan.
The packaging says made in Portugal and [their website] talks about their Portugal facility as well.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Advocacy for the James Hoffmann brewing method
I'd go with Hoffman's technique.
James Hoffman has a great video on the french press, and I have yet to find a better recipe:
Best recipe and the only reason I actually started using my French press.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Minimal taste and performance differences across French presses
Works fine for me!
Brewing technique is way more important.
They're all the same.
Whatever time you spend trying to decide between different french presses is probably better spent just making coffee with any of them.
French press brewing is easy to master
Getting good coffee from a French press is pretty easy , you can watch Hoffman's video about the French press technique , it should give you good results.
Yay same pinch bro! This was my first coffee as well and I got it last week.
Recommended brewing recipes and ratios
binasag yung prof ko yung gamit sa office niya hahaha.
Pagkalagay ng grounds at water sa FP hahaluin ko for 10 secs tapos steep for 4 minutes.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Glass French presses are fragile
Go steel, as cheap as you can. Glass works the same but breaks eventually.
I've broken so many glass ones, but I just like being able to see the coffee inside :(
broke within a year, both of them. Been several years with my metal one and it's a tank.
Same! I found a glass one new in box at the thrift store for $6. Dropped the darn thing and broke it!
Minimal performance differences among French presses
Functionally those two models will produce pretty much the same beverage.
My girlfriend has one that’s stainless steel insulated, but I actually hate the idea because after it’s brewed for a few minutes I prefer to pour it into another carafe or container to keep the coffee from getting bitter and acrid from over extracting the beans.
If you follow something like the James Hoffmann FP method really every FP is the same.
Stainless steel French presses can retain heat excessively and affect coffee taste
The plastic one is better, but for all the wrong reasons.
Sadly i can taste the steel.
