Snoop's Take

The CUISINART Ice Cream Maker is a versatile kitchen appliance designed for making homemade ice cream and frozen yogurt with ease. With a 2-quart double-insulated freezer bowl, this machine can produce creamy desserts in as little as 20 minutes, making it an excellent choice for ice cream enthusiasts. Consumer feedback highlights the ice cream maker's ease of use and the ability to customize recipes. Users appreciate its affordable price and note that "it's been great and suited most of my needs." However, some users have reported issues with inconsistent ice cream quality and the need for long freezing times, stating that "most the time I can get it to make ice cream, but it's usually still softer than I'd like." Overall, the CUISINART Ice Cream Maker is recommended for home cooks looking for an entry-level machine that offers good value for money and the joy of creating personalized frozen treats. While there are some concerns about consistency and freezing times, its strengths in ease of use and affordability make it a strong contender in its category.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Easy to use for making ice cream
It is so easy to use.
Easy operation for making ice cream
It was a partial success. I used a simple vanilla recipe provided on Cuisinart website.
Tride it with less and it worked just fine 😁
Works great for occasional use
The quality of the ice cream really depends on the recipe.
Allows for customization of recipes
I have one and like it. I don’t find it noisy and have made up my own recipes because I thought the ones they had had too much sugar/calories.
Ice cream can be made in as little as 20 minutes
It only takes 20 minutes and that it’s supposed to come out soft.
Makes smoother, denser ice cream
I heard it makes smoother, denser ice cream.
Great for beginners
If your making ice cream a bunch, buy a second bowl.
Only downfall is it can be messy
Affordable and effective
My $70 (closer to $50 when I bought it) 1.5 quart Cuisineart ice cream maker works great!
Spend less than $100 on your first ice cream maker. Get a model where you freeze the bowl before using. You’ll get some pretty darn good results from these inexpensive machines.
Allows for customization of flavors
And you know what's actually going into the ice cream instead of ingredients you can't pronounce
Great entry-level ice cream maker
It's been great and suited most of my needs.
I have this model for the price, it is a great entry to ice cream making.
it's also pretty easy to find them for super cheap on FB Marketplace/craigslist/Kijiji/etc.
Easier to achieve desired ice cream consistency with colder base
Can I go ahead and use it before the 24 hours are up? How long do you all "pre-freeze" your equipment?
You want the bowl as cold as you can get, since that’s the only thing freezing your mix.
Everything should be as cold as possible, your bowl might be ready if your mix is cold.
Even when it can pass the slosh test, it seems that at least an extra 24 hours will yield better results.
Affordable for home cooks
This one looks like it changes the temperature based on the ice cream hardness but I'm not sure what kind of overrun I might expect
if you're just a home cook and just want to make a quart at a time, then this is the perfect machine for a reasonable cost
Works well for making good ice cream
I have a base model from Cuisinart and it works really well.
All ice cream starts out at something closer to soft serve texture until you freeze it hard in the freezer.
Prefers Cuisinart over traditional methods
I keep it in there all the time so I can make ice cream at a moment’s notice.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Inconsistent ice cream placement
Ice cream machine that never puts sticks right
It‘s even the same side, it‘s left, right, left, right…
Yup, the treats are coming down in pairs. Sticky is consistent.
It actually looks like the ice creams aren't lined up consistently
Calibration issues lead to spacing problems
It’s probably not calibrated correctly
The stick inserter doesn’t appear “smart”, so that means the issue Is upstream. It is definitely a timing or calibration issue with the machine that creates or places the ice cream on the trays.
Its likely there are two extruders further up the line and they got placed too close together after maintenance.
I reckon it’s more like the ice creams are not placed right by the previous stage.
Stops churning if ice cream is too thick
My ice cream machine also stops turning after around 25 mins when the ice cream becomes too thick.
Takes up freezer space and requires long freezing time
I've had the Cuisinart ice cream maker in the past, I wouldn't recommend it. You have to keep the tub in the freezer (which takes up a lot of space) for a really long time before you make ice cream, it's kind of loud, and it takes a lot longer than a creami would.
Produces inconsistent ice cream quality
I used to own the cuisinart ice cream maker which I hated. It made horrible ice cream.
Ice cream can turn out too sweet or fatty
my ice cream was too sweet and fatty I followed Cuisinart's own recipe for vanilla ice cream and the result was a) too sweet and b) fatty to the point of leaving a grimy residue on the machine's plastic "paddle."
May not save money long-term
It’s only worth it if you think you’d enjoy making ice cream as a hobby.
I have 0 experience with other machines, but the ice cream is just as good if not better in many cases then store bought.
Bowl may not freeze completely in 24 hours
Most the time I can get it to make ice cream, but it's usually still softer than I'd like, and at least one time it didn't really work at all.
Noisy and messy traditional methods
I had to run it in my basement so I could hear myself think.
Cost concerns for other recommended machines
I will save my money then. The machines that are usually recommended here are over my budget and the ice and salt machines are so cheap but it seems that in the long run I would be wasting my money.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about machine's mechanics and timing
So judging by average it's perfect ;)
Probably set for the spacing between two boxes when it's between two Popsicles in the same box, and it thinks it's between the two in the same box when it's between boxes.
Gotta stop creaming so close.
Discussion about churning times
I’ve never churned any ice cream that long in my cuisinart. About 15 minutes max, often only 12 minutes until it’s churned.
General praise for Nemox machines
Nemox machines are generally excellent.
Comparison of motor speed and ice cream consistency
I'm not familiar with the Kumio but the ICE-21 scrapes closer and spins faster with more overrun, compared to the ICE-30
Discussion about overrun in ice cream production
I'm specifically looking for a sub-400 machine that will produce smooth ice cream/custard with lower overrun.
Its subjective based on individual opinions. Ive had all 3 and the ICE100 makes on average, 20% with very good consistency ice cream.
Personally, I can highly recommend the Cuisinart BCU 100. It makes fantastic ice cream.
Discussion about the importance of freezing conditions for ice cream quality
So, to slow the warming of the bowl, I put the ice cream base in the freezer to get cold.
Discussion about achieving firmer ice cream
They all come out “soft serve” consistency, by the way. You pack it away and let it harden after.
The hardness gauge just controls how long it churns before the timer goes off. I haven't noticed a huge difference once I do my final freeze in a chest freezer.
Discussion about ice and salt machines vs. modern machines
Has anyone used the machines that use ice and salt? The more popular ones are the Nostalgia brand.
The ice and rock salt method is just so finicky and the results as so variable and unreliable that for me it isn’t worth the nostalgia factor.
Growing up, we always had one of the old school electrics. They're surprisingly easy to use, once you master the salt to ice ratio, which I'm still working on.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about using emulsifiers in recipes
using only milk, cream, and sugar is fine. But you'll need an emulsifier so that the fat doesn't separate into that slimy residue.
Discussion on sugar alternatives for ice cream recipes
I really enjoyed this but my wife and I really like creamy ice cream instead of icey ice cream.
you need more sugar to prevent the formation of ice crystals.
there is ice cream without sugar. It's just a frozen dessert without sugar, the texture will be all off.
allulose is a good sugar replacement and doesn’t make the ice cream too hard or icy.

Discussion about upgrading to premium ice cream machines
so my real question is, for someone who is a semi-enthusiast, is it worth it to spend ~$200 more for a Musso Lello machine?
the musso is better but it's not needed to make world class ice cream.
if you love great ice cream, get a machine that will actually let you recreate it.
simply wonderful texture. would definitely reccomend getting good thermometer too though...my texture has significantly improved since i started measuring the custard cooking temp.
Discussion about ice cream machine types and recipes
i'm looking for the perfect machine to invest in. i don't eat dairy, so i'm looking for a machine that will be good for that.
Since a lot of people do end up selling, i would take a look at second hand purchase. I bought a cuisinart ice something whatever retail 80 for 15 bucks.
Wirecutter claimed that the ICM-15LS was better than the other Whynter machine for non-dairy, and those two were their top recommendations, which is at least one data point.
Discussion about comparisons with Ninja Creami
Cuisinart ice cream maker I've seen a lot of love on here for the Ninja Creami, but has anyone tried the Cuisinart ice cream maker.
Questions about recipe variations based on cream types
Which Cuisinart recipe was it - I’ve had two Cuisinart machines and they came with very different recipes?
Discussion about brands and regional availability
Those names you mention probably swim in that pool...
I was in the same situation. After a ton of research I just got too overwhelmed and bought a used wilfa ICM-C15 on finn.no for 1300 NOK.
Budget options available
Ice-21 is great. You can get it on Facebook marketplace almost new for cheap ~$30
I just managed to find one of those that had probably been used once and I paid $15 for it.
Discussion about upgrading to different machines
A couple of things (apart from freezer bowl requirements) that make me think to jump to a different machine with compressor like the Kumio
One downside about to be solved! The ICE-70 (discontinued sadly) has a physically identical freezer bowl but a tighter fitting and better beater/paddle/scraper
Discussion on the value of ice cream makers
Thank you. Could you give us some idea of the relative value / merits of the ice cream makers in those cost ranges?
Thank you, much appreciated. That's my general philosophy - for something I'll use a lot, spend more for a used / refurbished higher-quality and longer-lasting machine.
General comments about upgrading ice cream machines
I definitely do not regret it at all.
Do the medium-larger capacity (over 4-5L) machines store frozen gelato as well as make it, or would you need to get a freezer box to store quart containers of finished product?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Mention of plastic components in other brands
what i don't like about this machine: padle, shaft and screw (shaft) are made of plastic.
Discussion about compressor machines vs. Cuisinart
This gets asked at least once a week, so I would check out prior discussions. There are a lot of goo
Thank you. What do you like so much about compressor machines? What's better about them, other than not having to churn by hand?
Actually, no. Small company and limited importation.
Doubling your investment get's you the Musso and the power to merrily churn your way down 10-15f and produce a ready to plate product with no perceptible iciness and other-worldly smoothness in 15-20 min.
Mention of thrift stores having Cuisinart machines
It's worth checking your local thrift stores to see if they have any.
