What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Helps with muscle soreness relief
As a runner, it's been a game changer.
I have learned to love the roller.
I also feel less knee pain if I roll my IT band before and after running.
Improves flexibility and mobility
I love the feeling of sitting down on the ground after rolling them and feeling how much they've been loosened/released.
oh man, that has to be one of the best feelings, the mobility you get afterwards as well!!
This temporary increase is helpful for people who have muscular imbalances and issues that affect an exercise's range of motion, e.g., squat form going to shit because of extremely tight hamstrings, and hip flexors.
Provides a deep tissue massage experience
The lacrosse ball on the booty hurts like hell but boy does it work.

Can be painful initially
That looks like it hurts. I just bought an extra firm foam roller but it's way more firm then expected
No I have tight ITB and quads in general when I ran track but I wouldn't feel anything with a normal foam roller. Don't get me wrong, it hurt like hell when I first started so it was more so how much pressure I apply to my leg.
foamrolling is painful, explain to me again how is it beneficial to squish my muscles into a puree the articles i found online are pretty vague "because it's good for your muscles" well duh.
Effectiveness on IT bands is debated
I'm a professional who advises against it.
I've heard that it's damaging to the it bands to foam roll them.
Not all users find foam rollers effective
You can get a PVC pipe if you need a deeper massage, I personally find the actual foam rollers do not work.
When I was doing XC in high school I had some IT band issues and was told by a physician/physical therapist to roll it out to stop my knee from hurting.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Meta-analysis supports foam rolling's positive effects on strength and performance.
yes foam rolling has a positive effective on strength, performance, and perceived soreness.
Foam rolling is considered one part of a broader recovery strategy.
foam rolling is helpful but is only a puzzle piece in the bigger picture of muscle recovery, mobility, etc.
Discussion about vibrating foam rollers
vibrating foam rollers = gimmicky or useful? I saw these on amazon. wtf will this make a difference?
It works so much better than standard rolling. The vibration really helps because you can just sit on one spot and sort of rock back and forth and let the vibration do the work instead of constantly rolling.
I'm thinking about like my thighs or whatever, does the vibration really make that much difference?

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about alternatives to foam rollers
Do you think a Tens unit would be as good? They run about the same price range as some foam rollers.
Even if a TENS device provided similar benefits it would take magnitudes more time to use it on all of the parts of me I use the foam roller on.
Discussion on foam roller types and uses
Does the type of foam roller matter? I see that they vary in size and have different patterns.
Harder rollers will just mean that you feel it more.
Would a lacrosse ball help with soreness in my foot? It feels like I've had a knot or something in the arch of my foot that has a dull pain when I walk.
The point of the foam roller is to forcibly release the tightness and stickiness of the muscle fibers.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Foam rolling is widely used across various sports and fitness modalities.
Foam rolling isn’t a CrossFit thing. It’s used across a wide variety of sports and fitness modalities.
Discussion on foam rolling techniques
Is there an upper body equivalent to limber 11? I was going to make a post asking but yeah.
Your source is trying to sell a $20 eBook. I find it hard to judge if the information provided is a sales pitch or true.
Comparison of foam rolling with other tools
so, not like it's shown in the video/gifs? Do you have a link to proper instructions?
I had to watch this video to see what the hell a foam roller was....because my honest first thought was "what the fuck do you use a painters foam roller for in /r/fitness?"
Discussion on the importance of technique while foam rolling
Pain isn't always good. Sometimes it's just pain.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on effectiveness of foam rollers and stretching
most stretching does little to our mechanics over a long term.
stretching exercises involved in getting to that goal (strengthening too of course).
it’s almost entirely the latter that has any good evidence to support it, and when you do it, it’s amazing.
Dropping a slinky is just going to flop around. Dropping a stiff spring will bounce right back.
Personal experiences with foam rolling
the problems seem to be less severe. Also pain in the ankle is much much lower at start
Muscles definitely help to lessen the force of the landing, but if he wasn't flexible, he would tear a ton tendons in his legs.
Otherwise, strength, strength, strength.
My back, and I'll also use them on my glutes.
Debate about stretching and injury prevention
The old folks with good flexibility and with decent muscle mass have much better quality of life than those without.
95% of people won’t even think at that level of logical analysis, such as being aware of the placebo or Hawthorne effects.
Debate on the effectiveness of foam rolling
Research studies don't indicate foam rolling provides much value *in general*.
I sometimes use my $15 Amazon brand foam roller after workouts or at night during strength and mobility exercises.
I thought the science was coming to conclusion foam rollers don’t do much.
It might make no difference in the long term but if I have aching stiff calves it works wonders to make them more comfortable before bed.
Personal experiences with foam rolling and injury prevention
I don't know about studies, only personal experience.
Not a scientist or expert**
Skepticism about foam rolling's direct benefits on muscle growth.
Help in what? In order to nullify a hypothesis you need a hypothesis.
Caution against using foam rollers on the lower back
I'm sure most people here have heard of using foam rollers for relieving back pain and tension, if you decide to buy your very first foam roller then there's one thing that *must* be avoided.
The reason it is safe for your thoracic spine is because it has ribs that can more evenly displace the weight of your upper body while balancing on the roller.
Wow thanks for this, I’ll stretch my lower and upper back over random things to relieve the pain and sometimes it causes quite a bit of pain in my lower back, now I know why!
I've used mine along side my spine, but never close enough to cause problems. This works extremely well for me.
Skepticism about foam rolling effectiveness
If you look at the evidence for foam rolling, it is a gimmick (there is much more useful stuff you can be doing).
Varied opinions on foam rolling benefits
I hurt my back a few weeks ago and was told to buy one of these rollers for the future.
Debate on foam roller vs massage gun effectiveness
Are they equally effective?
It is absolutely worth it and does far more than a foam roller can do especially is areas that are harder to roll (forearms) or if you want to get deep tissue.
And because I’m a doofus I tweaked my back foam rolling while watching the how to video.
