Foam rollers are an absolute requirement for my back, and I'll also use them on my glutes.

Positive Feedback

I have both. Foam rolling is a pain in the ass so I was super inconsistent about doing it.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Foam rollers are essential for back and glute relief.
Foam rollers are an absolute requirement for my back, and I'll also use them on my glutes.
I bought a foam roller ... now what? I've been staring at it for 30 minutes, three times a day, trying to engage it in conversation, and that doesn't seem to provide the results I'm looking for, so I think it's time to try another program.
Oh Man! of course you put IT Bands right at the top. The absolute most painful one to roll out on the foam.
Foam rollers aid in muscle relief and recovery
Does the type of foam roller matter? I see that they vary in size and have different patterns.
The point of the foam roller is to forcibly release the tightness and stickiness of the muscle fibers.
Foam rollers aid in muscle relief and recovery.
Is there an upper body equivalent to limber 11? I was going to make a post asking but yeah.
It is so worth it though, i find that i dont get the same knee and hip pain when i roll out regularly.
Foam rolling increases circulation.
Why? Foam rolling increases circulation. Icing decreases circulation.
There's a bit more to it on a physiological side (massage, muscle tissue release, etc), but it basically boils down to the main benefit coming from the increased circulation that foam rolling provides.
Effective for muscle relief and recovery
I find I need the full 36" to do my back (where I get the most benefit from rolling).

Where it needs some work!

Foam rolling can be painful and inconsistent for some users.
I have both. Foam rolling is a pain in the ass so I was super inconsistent about doing it.
That looks like it hurts. I just bought an extra firm foam roller but it's way more firm then expected
This. The pain is other worldly.
Rolling on the lower back can cause pain.
I use my foam roller multiple times a day now for my upper and mid back and it's an incredibly useful tool that I'd highly recommend for those with non-fused spines, and especially if you're hunched over in a chair for most of the day, but don't make the same mistake I did and save yourself the misery and the hospital bill!
Wow thanks for this, I’ll stretch my lower and upper back over random things to relieve the pain and sometimes it causes quite a bit of pain in my lower back, now I know why!
It hurts like hell at first but after a while I was able to roll my it band without pain. Nowadays, I don't even feel it.
High risk of injury at the Lumbar/Thoracic intersection.
Most foam rollers I've seen in their literature specifically say don't roll out this region.
I advise to never roll out the IT band.
Foam rolling can be painful for some users
plain pipe with a little duct tape works fine. or the cheap $10 black foam rollers, but they're not as stiff.
DIY alternatives may be more cost-effective
It's probably just as effective as a trigger point therapy roller for about a tenth of the price.
got a foam roller for 5€, the pipe would be slightly cheaper but the foam makes up for it imo.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on different foam roller types and their uses
Harder rollers will just mean that you feel it more.
It feels like I've had a knot or something in the arch of my foot that has a dull pain when I walk.
Discussion on alternatives to foam rollers
Foam roller, worth it or not? So I'm experiencing some stiffness in my back and stretches only help for a while, and I'm thinking if a foam roller would be worth the money.
Lacrosse ball. $2 sports authority (US at least) Roll around on your glutes and you'll immediately know it's worth it.
and you can do most of the work you can do with a foam roller with a lacrosse ball as well - the lacrosse ball is even better at isolating individual muscles a little better than the foam roller, which covers a wider, more general area.
When I first did crossfit, my instructor required we use a lacrosse ball before every workout to increase mobility. Those suckers got knots I didn't even know were there.
Personal experiences with lacrosse balls for muscle relief
the seams leave marks and are uncomfortable.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

Comparison of foam rollers and massage guns for recovery.
Foam rollers vs Massage guns, best recovery tools for runners? I've been using foam rollers but recently am curious about the guns.
Thanks. Do you find the M gun more beneficial than the roller?
My Theragun was a game changer. I used that massage gun several times a day and it felt like it was knocking barnacles off my muscles.
Check out trigger point products. You'll get better stretching and rolling with them as opposed to the regular rollers.
Discussion on safe practices for foam rolling.
The reason it is safe for your thoracic spine is because it has ribs that can more evenly displace the weight of your upper body while balancing on the roller.
Get a lacrosse ball, or tennis ball, place it somewhere on your back, NOT on your spine, and move your body around so the ball hits different areas.
Comparison of vibrating foam rollers to traditional ones
It works so much better than standard rolling. The vibration really helps because you can just sit on one spot and sort of rock back and forth and let the vibration do the work instead of constantly rolling.
I'm thinking about like my thighs or whatever, does the vibration really make that much difference?
Comparison of massage guns and foam rollers
Are they equally effective?
It is absolutely worth it and does far more than a foam roller can do especially is areas that are harder to roll (forearms) or if you want to get deep tissue.
And because I’m a doofus I tweaked my back foam rolling while watching the how to video.
Discussion on recovery tools comparing foam rollers and massage guns.
Vibrating Foam Roller vs Massage Gun I’ve been trying to find the best recovery tools out there and don’t know whether a vibrating foam roller or a massage gun would be a better purchase.
Second the theragun - it’s a quick & easy to use recovery tool.
Discussion on foam roller types and personal preferences
I was wondering if you guys had any experience with foam rollers and which brand you'd reccomend?
I'd argue the pvc is actually better since it's stiffer.
I know a guy who used an old camping bed roll and gorilla glue.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on efficacy of foam rolling and stretching
they work short term, neurologically and psychologically, by increasing your pain tolerance, and that there is no real evidence that they do anything to muscle or facia tissue significantly.
stretching doesn't do anything for DOMS and old style high school stretches before exercise are actually harmful etc.
it’s almost entirely the latter that has any good evidence to support it, and when you do it, it’s amazing.
Muscles definitely help to lessen the force of the landing, but if he wasn't flexible, he would tear a ton tendons in his legs.
Personal experiences with stretching and foam rolling
the problems seem to be less severe. Also pain in the ankle is much much lower at start
Once you get into those long long distances, half your slow runs are essentially dynamic stretching.
Stretching has been ditched as a cornerstone PT treatment (for those of us who are evidence-based) for the better part of 15 years.
Skepticism about stretching benefits
At that mileage, you’re just moving so much that the muscles don’t have time to get too messed up.
People make strong claims because they know what works for them.
Debate over scientific evidence and personal anecdotes
the whole narrative of reaching for universal scientific insights given all the confounding variables of life is in my opinion a wrong-headed approach.
Science is hard and messy and often wrong. But we literally don't have any other way to learn new things about the world.
Discussion on foam roller recommendations and experiences
Any recommendations (including size, brand, etc.)?
It’s pretty cheap and goes on sale or has a coupon pretty often.
Discussion on effectiveness of foam rolling
vibrating foam rollers = gimmicky or useful? I saw these on amazon. wtf will this make a difference?
If you look at the evidence for foam rolling, it is a gimmick (there is much more useful stuff you can be doing).
Discussion on efficacy of foam rolling and stretching.
so, not like it's shown in the video/gifs? Do you have a link to proper instructions?
Makes sense and sounds like I'd agree with the subjects and the dead leg feeling.
Skepticism about stretching benefits.
When I was doing XC in high school I had some IT band issues and was told by a physician/physical therapist to roll it out to stop my knee from hurting.
Its like people having issues with infra. Spin and thinking they have deltoid or bicep issues.
