What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Helps alleviate chronic pain
the problems seem to be less severe. Also pain in the ankle is much much lower at start
Recommend an aesthetically pleasing MIPS skater-style helmet? I’ve been doing research on this quest
Is there a “correct “ way to roll up your yoga mats? Which way did you usually roll-up your yoga mats?
Fold your mat in half and then roll. That way the outside doesn't touch the inside
Effective for muscle recovery
At that mileage, you’re just moving so much that the muscles don’t have time to get too messed up.
Improves flexibility and mobility
It’s almost entirely the latter that has any good evidence to support it, and when you do it, it’s amazing.
Helps alleviate muscle tightness
As a runner, it's been a game changer.
I don't get that 'deep in the muscle so that you don't know where it is coming from' pain either.
Improves mobility and flexibility
oh man, that has to be one of the best feelings, the mobility you get afterwards as well!!
It's amazing how quickly I was able to put more pressure on it from when I started.
Helps alleviate tightness in back
Feels **GREAT** and pops my back.
Effective for muscle recovery after workouts
Some days I won't feel like I need it, do it anyways, and come away feeling so much better it's wild.
Effective for IT band issues
In my personal experience it was excellent for my IT band issues and continues to work for me as a warmup before my runs.
Provides temporary pain relief
It's temporary pain relief, and this is primarily what it's evidenced for.
Once they introduce metaphors like that you know they're just making shit up.
Helps reduce pain for users with scoliosis
Foam rolling has made my life so much better.
foam rollers have greatly reduced pain in my back and allowed me to run virtually pain free.
Effective for muscle relaxation and recovery
It has helped soo freakin much after PT and work.
It's highly over rated, but it's still OK.
Once you start rolling there's no stopping!.
I was always flopping around on the floor doing this stuff, but now I can hit a couple of spots really quickly and be good as new!
Provides relief from muscle tightness
If we are talking about back pain this video out performs everything I have tried and it is free and takes a whole 12 minutes out of your day.
Affordable compared to in-store prices
Best prices I've seen are on Amazon. They're usually $40 or more in store.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Limited evidence for effectiveness
they work short term, neurologically and psychologically, by increasing your pain tolerance, and that there is no real evidence that they do anything to muscle or facia tissue significantly.
Stretching doesn't do anything for DOMS and old style high school stretches before exercise are actually harmful etc.
Foam rolling on a regular basis is one of the best ways, outside of having a full time recovery coach, to keep the muscles and myofascia loose and operating smoothly.
May not work for everyone
You can get a PVC pipe if you need a deeper massage, I personally find the actual foam rollers do not work.
That looks like it hurts. I just bought an extra firm foam roller but it's way more firm then expected
Excessive pain reported by some users
It hurts like hell at first but after a while I was able to roll my it band without pain.
Simple six by the same guy is good for upper
Not universally accepted by physiotherapists
Why are most physiotherapists against foam rolling? I've been with 3 different physiotherapists in total and all of them were against the idea of foam rolling but they never gave me a fully fleshed out answer.
Just curious, what is the good low hanging fruit you speak of because i thought foam rolling/using a stick was one of those?
May cause excessive pain for some users
Haven't paid for a massage since I got one.
Effectiveness varies from person to person
Maybe I'm just not doing it long enough...
I try foam roller at the gym but I just do it and I don't knew if I feel any difference

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Commentary on the fun aspect of foam rollers
Kicking a foam roller
That looks fun to play NGL lol

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on foam rolling techniques
Just a heads up -- it is not possible to stretch your IT band. It is about as strong as a car tire.
Discussion on using foam rollers for hair styling
I have lots of questions about using foam/sponge rollers in my hair! I was going to go pick up some of these later, and I was going to sleep in them tonight.
I've never had luck with foam rollers. My ends are always a tighter curl than the top, so I look weird, even if I fingercomb it out a bit.
The curls they create are SO resilient, you can do practically anything with them. A setting lotion really helps with this.
If this is your first time experimenting with these rollers, I'm going to highly suggest that you do it on a day where you won't have to go out or at least on a day where you will have time to wash your hair the next morning.
Discussion on using golf balls for muscle knots
I use golfballs and my whole bodyweight, does wonders on my shoulders and muscles.
People think I'm crazy for using a golf ball. Tennis balls seem to go flat under my weight, but a golf ball will really dig into my back and work out a lot of knots.

Discussion on safe foam roller usage for lower back pain
I'm sure most people here have heard of using foam rollers for relieving back pain and tension, if you decide to buy your very first foam roller then there's one thing that *must* be avoided.
The reason it is safe for your thoracic spine is because it has ribs that can more evenly displace the weight of your upper body while balancing on the roller.
Wow thanks for this, I’ll stretch my lower and upper back over random things to relieve the pain and sometimes it causes quite a bit of pain in my lower back, now I know why!.
This works extremely well for me. Make sure to include you glutes as well, as those are big muscles that if knotted up, will cause lower back issues too.
Discussion on personal routines and frequency of use
My back has been really tight lately, someone told me to use a foam roller.
Discussion on essential pilates accessories for home practice
If you have $150 dollars, what are the first pilates accessories/equipment you're buying?
the magic circle is one of the most useful & classic tools you can use in pilates.
Discussion on cleaning yoga mats
I know I should probably deep clean it more often lol.
I bought a rubber mat at one point and it needed so much upkeep after hot classes I switched back to my old one.
Varied recommendations from physiotherapists
Oh, that's strange. I lived with a physio and she recommended foam rolling.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Anecdotal experiences differ from research findings
Sure, which is why I only talked about my personal experience. 🙂
Looking at "knees over toes guy" on YouTube, it seems you can become very flexible just through strength training.
Discussion on stretching vs foam rolling effectiveness
Stretching has been ditched as a cornerstone PT treatment (for those of us who are evidence-based) for the better part of 15 years.
Anecdotes on foam roller usage
Once the pain subsides and you just sit there for a second the full stretch feels amazing.
I had to watch this video to see what the hell a foam roller was....because my honest first thought was "what the fuck do you use a painters foam roller for in /r/fitness?"
Discussion on the complexity of pain science
Pain science is incredibly complicated and you can't always boil it down to something like 'restricted movement'.
We are not that fragile. If I could alter your myofascia with so little pressure you would fall apart if loaded.
Personal anecdotes on foam rolling
Although it’s odd that they’ve dismissed foam rolling as a source of temporary relief for you.
Users share varied experiences with foam rolling
I just put them on the ground and use as much bodyweight as possible.
There is no "best one" it's all about your level of pain tolerance.
