What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Helps alleviate chronic foot pain
stretching and rolling helped it out tremendously
Lightweight and portable for travel
Studies that show foam rollers don't work like many of us think they do? The BBC has a podcast called "Sliced Bread", looking at the claims made for various products and examining how much truth there is in them.
I bought a foam roller ... now what? I've been staring at it for 30 minutes, three times a day, trying to engage it in conversation, and that doesn't seem to provide the results I'm looking for, so I think it's time to try another program.
Joe DeFranco \\m/ Love his stuff, especially his Westside workouts.
Foam rollers relax your muscles by helping to remove the “knots” in the muscles, but Starrett says this effect is counter productive since the purpose of lifting and the the warm up itself is to get your muscles primed and ready to fire.
Effective for muscle recovery and pain relief
use my foam roller multiple times a day now for my upper and mid back and it's an incredibly useful tool that I'd highly recommend for those with non-fused spines
As a runner, it's been a game changer.
I find that i dont get the same knee and hip pain when i roll out regularly.
foam rolling at the beginning of my training, to release tightness because if I do not release it, in the long run it causes injuries and unnecessary muscular pain.
Effective for back pain relief
My back has been really tight lately, someone told me to use a foam roller.
Feels **GREAT** and pops my back.
By end of the day, my back is a bit tense, and muscles haven't had a good opportunity to be stretched.
Helps alleviate chronic pain
My first day with a roam roller involved pain, cold sweat and pain.
Effective for muscle relaxation
It's like getting free massages for the rest of your life.
Thank you for giving the courage to try it!
Rollers are useful for muscle recovery
Now I’m curious what other cyclists use these. And are you using them before or after (or both) cycling.
Rollers are safer. But as I say, for me, one evening of madness with a massage gun lead to an amazing change which I'm eternally grateful for, but - please - consider this as purely anecdotal.
Can alleviate muscle tightness when used correctly
Rollers (and sticks) aren't intended for trigger point therapy, but they can be helpful if used correctly.
Helps with muscle soreness and tightness
I've always assumed I needed to let my muscles get some days off.
I think it helped me a lot with muscle soreness/tightness
Effective for muscle recovery
I've never done foam rolling before and I'm just curious how much foam rolling and crossfit go together.
You might not notice the improved recovery right away because the DOMS are insane when you first start.
Helps alleviate muscle tightness
I like this foam roller but it can be painful at times.
Enhances mobility post-workout
Foam roller is but one of the tools he goes over (although he seems to prefer Lacrosse ball and other more *painful* methods now).

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Limited long-term effectiveness
stretching exercises involved in getting to that goal (strengthening too of course)
rolled it out to stop my knee from hurting
foam rolling can serve a purpose in both the warm up and the recovery, but you could warm up without foam rolling using dynamic exercises instead
Risk of injury when used incorrectly on lower back
The reason it is safe for your thoracic spine is because it has ribs that can more evenly displace the weight of your upper body while balancing on the roller.
Most foam rollers I've seen in their literature specifically say don't roll out this region.
it’s been about a week since then and it doesn’t hurt if i bend/ touch my toes but if i touch my lower back / press at certain points it feels like it’s bruised buts it’s not?
Risk of injury when used incorrectly
Only roll out the glutes, hip flexors, quads, and hamstrings.
Foam rolling does not influence tissue long-term
Foam rolling etc does not influence tissue in any form.
Risk of serious injury if used incorrectly
My friend had a torn calf muscle, thought is was just sore. He rolled it a bunch, and it broke loose a blood clot which traveled up and got caught in his lungs.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Anecdotal benefits of self-massage tools
I've been doing the lacrosse ball massage technique for awhile, but I always found it easier to put it in a longer sock and sling that over the shoulder so you can do more active rolling while holding the sock so the ball doesn't fly away if you lift up from the wall.

Debate on foam rolling usage timing
I've only heard of people doing it after when running.
Need for correct technique information
Can you post where you learned correct technique?
Discussion on dealing with muscle soreness post-exercise
So, I’m on day 2 of soreness from my first CrossFit session, and wow… it feels even worse today! Sitting, standing, walking—it’s all a struggle.
Keep moving though even while sore - go for a walk, do some stretching, even a slow and steady row or bike will help.
Getting up every 15 or 30 minutes and doing a quick 30 second movement series, or taking a walk, will help.
Movement really does help! If you can tolerate it, try going to another class in the next day or two and see how you feel once you get warmed up.
Discussion on frequency of foam rolling
I think it's super important to kind of feel it out it's a complicated balancing act and you gotta figure out what feels right for what you are trying to physically achieve.
Discussion on foam rolling timing
When is the best time to foam roll muscles Should i roll out muscles before the run workout or after the workout?
I would personally say either before, or on a recovery day, not directly post workout as the benefits from foam rolling won’t be realised immediately post workout.
Right before or few hours before? I'm aware that static stretching reduces the stored elastic energy that is needed in running, i know that static stretch and foam rolling are not the same thing.
After the workout, before stretching

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Debate on stretching efficacy
It’s almost entirely the latter that has any good evidence to support it, and when you do it, it’s amazing.
At that mileage, you’re just moving so much that the muscles don’t have time to get too messed up.
Stretching doesn’t help - but won’t hurt you if you are consistent.
Anecdotal benefits of stretching during exercise
Once you get into those long long distances, half your slow runs are essentially dynamic stretching.
Meaning roll your body forward or backward so you are stretching either the quad or hamstring near the IT band.
The fact that I got practically the same information in under a minute from an album of gifs suggests that a 20-minute video is probably not a great format.
Debate on foam roller safety and usage
Wow thanks for this, I’ll stretch my lower and upper back over random things to relieve the pain and sometimes it causes quite a bit of pain in my lower back, now I know why!
Get a lacrosse ball, or tennis ball, place it somewhere on your back, NOT on your spine, and move your body around so the ball hits different areas. I've used mine along side my spine, but never close enough to cause problems. This works extremely well for me.
I've heard that it's damaging to the it bands to foam roll them. Anybody know the truth to that?
Just a heads up -- it is not possible to stretch your IT band. It is about as strong as a car tire.
Debate on foam rolling effectiveness and usage
Don’t you lay on the foam roller to roll out your back?
Skepticism about foam roller benefits
1 day, **ONE DAY** of foam rolling and my month long problem was resolved.
