I don’t think people need an extensive routine but when you’re super tight some active stretches definitely help.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Helps reduce muscle soreness
I don’t think people need an extensive routine but when you’re super tight some active stretches definitely help.
I went from never rolling and always injured to rolling 15-20 mins spread during the day. I am no longer injury prone.
It might make no difference in the long term but if I have aching stiff calves it works wonders to make them more comfortable before bed.
Foam rollers are an absolute requirement for my back, and I'll also use them on my glutes.
Portable for home and outdoor use
Once you get into those long long distances, half your slow runs are essentially dynamic stretching.
Foam Rollers Do you find foam rollers to be beneficial in your warm ups and recovery? If so, is there a specific brand suggested, or does a cheap $5 one work just as fine as the $20+?
Foam rollers vs Massage guns, best recovery tools for runners? I've been using foam rollers but recently am curious about the guns. Do you think the price is worth it? Looking to reduce recovery time.
Does the type of foam roller matter? I see that they vary in size and have different patterns. I also see that some are more hard or more soft then others, does that mean there are different types for different uses or it doesn't matter?
Effective for tight muscle relief
Not a scientist or expert*
Harder rollers will just mean that you feel it more. Same goes for the ones with bumps etc on them.
Love his stuff, especially his Westside workouts
oh man, that has to be one of the best feelings, the mobility you get afterwards as well!!
Helps relieve muscle tension
I'm sure most people here have heard of using foam rollers for relieving back pain and tension, if you decide to buy your very first foam roller then there's one thing that *must* be avoided.
The reason it is safe for your thoracic spine is because it has ribs that can more evenly displace the weight of your upper body while balancing on the roller.
Wow thanks for this, I’ll stretch my lower and upper back over random things to relieve the pain and sometimes it causes quite a bit of pain in my lower back, now I know why!.
This works extremely well for me. I actually keep mine by my desk so I can just use it when I need it right away.
Helps relieve muscle soreness
As a runner, it's been a game changer.
I have learned to love the roller.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Uncertainty about long-term benefits
Most stretching does little to our mechanics over a long term.
Stretching and mechanics, I don't know what they mean.
They just smush your skin around but don’t really break up the fascia.
Only roll out the glutes, hip flexors, quads, and hamstrings.
Potential for ineffective use
This is one area where I have to ignore the data-my yoga practice leaves me rejuvenated and relieved soreness and stiffness in my hamstrings, hip flexors, and shoulders.
Research studies don't indicate foam rolling provides much value *in general*. Here's an excerpt from [A Meta-Analysis of the Effects of Foam Rolling on Performance and Recovery](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6465761/).
You can get a PVC pipe if you need a deeper massage, I personally find the actual foam rollers do not work.
I just have one of the Amazon basics ones, believe it’s an 18” - I hate the thick sturdy ones with spikes as they’re too painful for me and not in the right way, they just don’t work for rolling, but I know some people like them.

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Alternatives to foam rollers discussed
Any Substitute for a Foam Roller? I am planning on getting a foam roller to help massage my calfs and hopefully help with my shin splints.
I use a lacrosse ball as well. I have a friend who uses a nalgene water bottle.
If I'm travelling I might use my nalgene bottle. If that's too firm wrap a towel around it.
Some people also manage to use tennis balls or baseballs; if you have more than one, you can put multiple balls into a sock and roll that way.

Discussion on safe foam rolling techniques
Most foam rollers I've seen in their literature specifically say don't roll out this region.
Sorry, stupid brain doesn't understand exactly what '45 degrees on either side' means and don't want to cause injury.
Your source is trying to sell a $20 eBook. I find it hard to judge if the information provided is a sales pitch or true.
The vibration helps.
Comparison of vibrating foam rollers
It works so much better than standard rolling. The vibration really helps because you can just sit on one spot and sort of rock back and forth and let the vibration do the work instead of constantly rolling.
Questions about foam rolling impact
I'm thinking about like my thighs or whatever, does the vibration really make that much difference?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Debate on stretching effectiveness
Stretching has been ditched as a cornerstone PT treatment (for those of us who are evidence-based) for the better part of 15 years.
It’s wild how much PT is either placebo or uncertain but done anyway because patients want some kind of treatment in person beyond strengthening exercises.
He does suggest there's no evidence to support CF's quintessential recovery method.
Foam rolling isn’t a CrossFit thing. It’s used across a wide variety of sports and fitness modalities.
Personal experiences vary widely
Sure, which is why I only talked about my personal experience.
At that mileage, you’re just moving so much that the muscles don’t have time to get too messed up.
I'm not sure. My wife has one she uses to treat muscle pain and I've used it when I've had a muscle strain in my back or something causing similar localized pain.
I have both. Foam rolling is a pain in the ass so I was super inconsistent about doing it.
Debate on foam rollers vs massage guns
For me, my Theragun was a game changer. I was coming off an injury hiatus that had me not running for a couple years.
Debate on foam roller effectiveness
If you look at the evidence for foam rolling, it is a gimmick (there is much more useful stuff you can be doing).
Debate on foam rolling effectiveness
It's all good though. It's reddit. It's not that surprising.
Sources? Even if rolling on the ITB doesn't help it surely can't hurt.
